The renovation and expansion of the historic 1903 Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Public Library in Baraboo preserves its legacy while modernizing it for future generations. Originally designed by Louis Claude, the library remains a cherished landmark, maintaining its neo-classical charm. This latest transformation enhances functionality to accommodate expanded programming and collections. Completed in two phases, the project introduced an 18,636-square-foot addition with a grand entrance and lobby, seamlessly connecting old and new spaces. The renovation of the existing 13,241-square-foot library added a 150-person auditorium, creation classroom, children’s program room, study rooms, and expanded teen and adult areas. Outdoor improvements include a landscaped plaza, an outdoor classroom, and rooftop solar panels for energy efficiency. The team carefully restored the library’s intricate masonry and period-specific architectural details while integrating modern design elements. The exterior façade aligns with the original building, featuring gabled metal rooflines, brick and stone finishes, and large windows for natural light. Additional upgrades, such as a drive-up window, book drop, and improved parking, enhance accessibility while maintaining the library’s historic character. Strategic phasing minimized disruptions, allowing the library to remain operational throughout construction. Sustainability was a key focus, with advanced HVAC systems, solar readiness, low-flow fixtures, rain gardens, bird-friendly glass, and native landscaping reducing environmental impact and operational costs.
