MilliporeSigma, the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has been developing multi-step, complex, and highly potent pharmaceutical compounds for more than 30 years and continues to be an industry leader in the development and custom manufacture of these life-saving treatments for cancer and other devastating diseases. Vogel Bros. Building Co. was chosen as the construction partner for their latest 70,000 square foot HPAPI and ADC manufacturing facility expansion in Verona. The expansion is a result of MilliporeSigma’s contract manufacturing product and services growth and followed the guidelines from the Campus Master Plan previously prepared by the Vogel Bros. Building Co. team. The addition allows large-scale manufacturing of increasingly potent compounds. HPAPIs are a critical element of targeted therapies due to their extremely effective cell-killing abilities at low doses, resulting in reduced side effects for patients. They are used in novel cancer therapies, including antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), which are changing the landscape of cancer treatments. HPAPIs require specialized handling and manufacturing facilities that protect the safety of employees and their environment. Many potential life-saving treatments never make it to market in part due to the specialized handling requirements. MilliporeSigma’s expansion at its Verona site positions the company as one of the largest single-digit nanogram occupational exposure limit (OEL) CDMO providers in the world. The multi-story production and lab facility includes six (6) new Kilo Lab spaces, each with three 50 1 (15 gal. reactors), drying ovens, evaporators, lyophilizers, and isolators.
